Speaking with Phantasmag during pre-production, Werwulf cinematographer Jarin Blaschke discussed the look of his latest collaboration with director Robert Eggers.

While the Oscar-nominated DP stressed that he can’t say much, he did reveal that the medieval horror film—which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe—will mark a departure from his work on Nosferatu. “It won’t be Romantic, I’ll tell you that much. It will be pretty grim and brutal.”

Blaschke, who has worked with Eggers since his 2008 short film adaption of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart, is known for his naturalistic lighting—as evident in the dark blue moonlight scenes in Nosferatu which approximate human vision at night. The DP said that he and Eggers bonded as detail-oriented creatives, joking that they were “snobs” and “hipsters” with a shared taste.

The cinematographer shot the last three Eggers projects on film, but revealed that Werwulf will be defined by an even more textured look. “The Northman was extremely clean—for 35mm anyway—with very fine grain. For Nosferatu, I let it be a high-speed film, and it’s still a modern film stock, so it’s not really that different. This next one, we’re really going to try to give it some texture. And I’ve got some ideas. Early tests are very promising. It won’t look like anything I’ve seen this decade, that’s for sure.”

Blaschke has reportedly shot Werwulf in the 1:37:1 aspect ratio, dubbed “the Academy ratio” because of its standard use for sound film in the 1930s. This promises a boxier image than the 1:66:1 ratio of Nosferatu

The DP confirmed that location shooting, which took place across the UK starting in autumn last year, wrapped in late January.

With a cast led by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily Rose-Depp, Werwulf hits US theatres December 25th, exactly two years after Nosferatu. Eggers mainstays Willem Dafoe and Ralph Ineson also star.

Our interview with Blaschke, breaking down all his films with Robert Eggers, was originally published in July 2025 in Issue 003.
