A24 has released the official trailer for Backrooms.

The teaser follows Chiwetel Ejiofor’s protagonist as he discovers a strange dimension of endless empty rooms and documents them with a camcorder, recreating the found footage feel of Kane Parsons’ original viral web series. From the music to the characters, the trailer features several nods to the series, like the wandering figures in hazmat suits and Parsons’ track “Compromises”.

Parsons, whose YouTube liminal horror sensation was inspired by a 4chan creepypasta, is directing the big-screen adaptation from a script by Will Soodik (Ash vs Evil Dead). The film has received an R-rating and has a runtime of 105 minutes.

Backrooms will see Sentimental Value star Renate Reinsve make her Hollywood horror debut, after she had to drop out of Zach Creggers’ Weapons following the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The film also begins a horror streak for Chiwetel Ejiofor, who is currently filming Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist.

Ejiofor and Reinsve are joined by Mark Duplass (Creep), Finn Bennet (True Detective: Night Country), and Lukita Maxwell (Shrinking).
