After the original Blair Witch Project directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, and stars Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, were confirmed to have boarded Lionsgate’s upcoming reboot as executive producers, Williams took to X to clarify that the new instalment won’t be a “remake”.
“Nothin’ but gratitude. Oh, yeah, it’s not a ‘remake’. You just wait. The Witch is back…”
As confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, Leonard and Williams have joined the project after expressing frustration over not being involved when the film was first announced at CinemaCon in 2024.
Following filmmakers like Curry Barker (Obsession) and the Philippou brothers (Talk to Me) in making the leap from YouTube to directing a feature horror film, Dylan Clark will helm the reboot. His viral horror short, Portrait of God, is currently being developed into a big-screen adaptation produced by Jordan Peele and Sam Raimi.
Leonard and Williams, alongside their co-star Heather Donahue, have had a fractured relationship with the franchise. The trio played a huge role in the 1999 original, operating the cameras and improvising the majority of their lines. However, as struggling actors without proper legal representation, they walked away from the hugely successful indie film—which made over $250 million at the worldwide box office—with barely any of the profits. Moreover, since the actors were encouraged to use their real names in the film as part of a viral marketing gimmick, they later sued Artisan Entertainment for using their names and likenesses in the 2000 sequel and won a $300,000 settlement each.
The Blair Witch reboot will be produced by Blumhouse’s Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity, Five Nights at Freddy’s), Atomic Monster’s James Wan (Saw, The Conjuring), and Roy Lee (Barbarian, Hokum).
