The Ginger Snaps Trilogy Blu-ray Review

25 years after the original hit theatres, Second Sight has released a Blu-ray set of the cult horror films

Second Sight

After premiering at Munich’s Fantasy Filmfest in August 2000 and screening at that year’s TIFF, John Fawcett’s Cronenbergian teen horror film Ginger Snaps has spawned a massive cult following and paved the way for films like Jennifer’s Body. Driven by Karen Walton’s sharp script and a pair of stellar leads in Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle, this gory, bleak film about a teenage girl turning into a werewolf as she gets her period remains an inimitable classic.

Reissuing their 2023 rigid slipcase set in compact packaging, boutique UK distributor Second Sight Films has released a Blu-ray set of the entire trilogy. While the original is the obvious gem in this collection, the 2004 sequels, shot back-to-back, are surprisingly enjoyable follow-ups — especially considering the departure of the original writer-director duo of Fawcett and Walton. Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed picks up several weeks after the events of the first film (to say much more would spoil the original’s memorable ending), while Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning finds Perkins and Isabelle playing the ancestors of their characters in 1815.

While Lionsgate’s Vestron Video has just delivered the film’s first 4K version in the US, the Second Sight edition maintains its value — aside from obviously featuring the entire trilogy — with a reliably vast assortment of special features. The original is awarded the most: with featurettes like “The Making of Ginger Snaps”, “Production Design Work”, and 17 minutes of Perkins and Isabelle’s cast auditions and rehearsals. Additionally, all three directors, John Fawcett, Brett Sullivan, and Grant Harvey, appear in new interviews.
