Focus Features has unveiled the official trailer for Robert Eggers’ Werwulf.

Drenched in blood and rain, the harrowing teaser follows Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp as a married couple wrestling with the former’s terrible curse, while Willem Dafoe plays a hunter targeting the titular beast.

Opening with the evocative image of a full moon to the sound of a howling wolf, the trailer begins with a flashback that reveals how Taylor-Johnson’s character was cursed as a child. In the present day, he is a farmer travelling with his wife and three children to a remote village in medieval England. The clip culminates as a naked Taylor-Johnson foams at the mouth and begins his transformation.

Werwulf sees Robert Eggers reunite with Nosferatu stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp and marks his fourth collaboration with Willem Dafoe. The writer-director describes the creature feature’s medieval setting as “a really brutal, unforgiving, merciless, grotesque world,” while calling Taylor-Johnson’s performance the best of his career.

The trailer gives us our first look at Jarin Blaschke’s grim 35mm cinematography, which features visible grain and black-and-white sequences.

Werwulf will release in US cinemas this Christmas Day, exactly two years after Nosferatu.
