American Horror Story: 13 will not be the final season of FX’s cult horror anthology series.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Ryan Murphy has reiterated that the show’s star-packed 13th season won’t be its last, revealing that he has already started planning the next instalment. “Season 13 is not the end. I’m working on Season 14 as we speak in terms of, What’s the idea? and Who wants to be in it?”
Premiering this September on FX, American Horror Story: 13 will see Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, and Sarah Paulson each reprise several of their fan-favourite characters, while fellow franchise veterans Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Emma Roberts, Frances Conroy, Billie Lourd, Leslie Grossman, and more also return.
Because of the returning stars and multiverse framework, which Murphy has likened to The Avengers, fans speculated that 13 would serve as the conclusion to the entire series. While Murphy has explained that the show will continue, a crossover event of this scale won’t be repeated. “This season is a tribute to all of the seasons, which we’ll never do again. But it was fun. It was like getting the band back together and once they got on the set with me, it was like we never stopped making this. Most of them had accents and they instantly fell back into their characters. It was fascinating and thrilling.”

Murphy also commented on Ariana Grande’s departure from the season due to scheduling conflicts. The Wicked star, who previously worked with Murphy in 2015 on the slasher comedy series Scream Queens, was set to appear in a small role, but filming clashed with her Eternal Sunshine Tour. “Who is busier than Ariana Grande? No one,” Murphy said, before implying she may return in the planned role, which he describes as a “big swing”, in a future instalment. “I might bring that back for another season.”
As for the future of the series with Season 14 and beyond, Murphy says the show should be able to continue for long as he wants it to. “I have a great passion for that show, and [FX boss] John Landgraf has a great passion for that show. It’s a very important show in my career. It’s something that John said, ‘As long as you want to keep making them, I’ll keep airing them.’ That’s always been the idea behind it, which is very empowering.”
In addition to planning another season of AHS and a potential Glee reboot, Murphy revealed that he is shooting a vampire-centred horror series this December in Europe. “I always wondered why nobody has made a show about these characters I love,” alluding to an unnamed book that has already been adapted into a film.
American Horror Story: 13 premieres September 24th on FX.
