First Look at Mike Flanagan’s Carrie Remake: A Modern-Day Twist on Stephen King’s Classic
The reimagining from The Haunting of Hill House showrunner premieres this autumn on Prime Video

Entertainment Weekly has released the first-look images from Mike Flanagan’s upcoming Carrie miniseries, a reimagining of Stephen King’s 1974 debut novel about a bulied highschooler with telekinetic powers.
Carrie was famously adapted by Brian De Palma in a 1976 film starring Sissy Spacek that has become a classic in its own right. Speaking with EW, Flanagan has teased his fresh take on the material.
“The themes that [Stephen King] was talking about half a century ago of kindness versus cruelty, of empathy and bullying, and violence at school have become even more relevant today than he could have contemplated because of our relationship to technology and the degree to which violence encroaches on our high schoolers, especially in the United States. So that meant we had an opportunity to tell a story about a modern teenage experience that could use the seeds of these characters King created 50 years ago, but express them completely differently.”

Summer H. Howell (Time Cut) and Samantha Sloyan (Midnight Mass) will star as Carrie and her abusive mother, respectively, while Matthew Lillard (Five Nights at Freddy’s) plays Principal Grayle. Josie Totah (Faces of Death), Siena Agudong (Resident Evil), and Arthur Conti (Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma) feature as Carrie’s classmates, and Amber Midthunder (Prey) plays the gym teacher who takes pity on the titular character. The recurring cast is filled with Mike Flanagan regulars, including Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, Ruth Codd, and Michael Trucco.
Flanagan explained that a key part of his expansion of the story will be the acknowledgement of other women who share Carrie’s “TK gene”. “Something that the De Palma adaptation ignored was Carrie’s place in the larger universe, that she’s part of a sorority of very gifted women and just doesn’t know it. The book absolutely points at that, but that was something we could pick up and run with.”
After the first instalment, each episode will open with the story of another telekinetic woman, which may be where we encounter some of the attached actors with unconfirmed roles, such as Kate Siegel (The Fall of the House of Usher), Cassandra Naud (Influencer), and Delainey Hayles (The Vampire Lestat). “Carrie’s specific place among that group of women is part of the real joy that we get to discover over the course of the season,” Flanagan added.
Carrie premieres on Prime Video this fall.
