Zendaya and Alex Garland are going back to science fiction.
Fresh off two of the biggest films of the year, The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Zendaya is set to star in an untitled sci-fi film from Alex Garland, the director behind sci-fi horror thrillers Ex Machina and Annihilation and writer of 28 Days Later.
The upcoming A24 film, set to shoot in 2027, will mark a return to the genre for Zendaya after her role in Dune: Part Three, which hits theatres this December.
The film sees Garland return to the sci-fi roots of his first two features, Ex Machina and Annihilation, as well as the miniseries Devs. Filming recently wrapped on his adaptation of the dark fantasy video game Elden Ring, a big-budget A24 that reunites the writer-director with his Warfare star Kit Connor and Civil War actress Cailee Spaeny.
Garland will also pen the script for the third 28 Years Later film, which director Danny Boyle recently described as “on the back burner” at the London Film Festival. There have been doubts over whether Boyle and Garland would be able to complete their critically acclaimed trilogy due to the poor box office performance of middle entry 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, but Boyle has reiterated that the film will eventually be made.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, while a release as early as 2028 is possible given the anticipated 2027 filming date.
