With a whopping 16 nods, Sinners has broken the record for most-nominated film ever. Ryan Coogler’s vampire period thriller beats out previous record-holders All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land, which all earned 14 nominations.
Sinners was nominated in every category it could have been considered for, barring Best Actress. Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo secured surprise nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively. They replace expected nominees Ariana Grande (Wicked: For Good) and Paul Mescal (Hamnet).
While the Golden Globes favoured One Battle After Another and Hamnet over the horror film (only awarding it Best Original Score and the consolation prize and the quasi-consolation prize of Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement), the record-breaking feat suggests that Sinners may be embraced more warmly by the Academy voters.
A significant detail is that, like the Critics’ Choice Awards, the Oscars have the division of Original and Adapted Screenplay. While One Battle After Another is only loosely based on the 1990 Thomas Pynchon novel Vineland, it has been placed in the Adapted Screenplay category, leaving Coogler to stand a real chance of winning Original Screenplay.
The announcement this morning from Los Angeles also brought good news for Sinners’ fellow horror films. Frankenstein notched 9 nominations, including Supporting Actor for Jacob Elordi and Adapted Screenplay for Guillermo Del Toro, and it will likely do well in the artisan categories (Costume Design for Kate Hawley, Production Design for Tamara Deverell and Shane Vieau, Makeup and Hairstyling for Mike Hill, Jordan Samuel, and Cliona Furey). Meanwhile, Amy Madigan’s Weapons villain Aunt Gladys has been rewarded with a Supporting Actress nomination, while Bugonia earned four nods: Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Actress for Emma Stone, making her the youngest woman in Oscar history to accumulate seven nominations.
