Amy Madigan has won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Aunt Gladys in Weapons.
Madigan’s enigmatic witch became something of a cultural phenomenon following the release of the surprise hit horror odyssey. “First and foremost, I just have to thank Zach Cregger, our writer and director,” the actress said. “He just wrote a dream part, and he let me grab it by the throat. We had a ball.”
The first performance as a witch to earn an Academy Award since Ruth Gordon’s turn in Rosemary’s Baby, Amy Madigan’s Gladys makes her only the seventh actor ever to win for a role in a horror movie.
During her acceptance speech, where she admitted she was “overwhelmed”, both Madigan’s husband, actor Ed Harris, and Zach Cregger were visibly teary-eyed. The victory is also notable for the fact that her award was the only category in which Weapons was nominated.
