A24 has released the teaser trailer and official poster for Backrooms. The feverishly anticipated liminal space horror film, directed by Kane Parsons in an expansion of his viral YouTube series, hits theatres May 29th.
The feverishly anticipated horror movie, which adapts Kane Parsons’ viral found footage web series, will hit theatres on May 29th. Parsons is directing the film from a script by Will Soodik, with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve starring.
Produced by James Wan (Saw, The Conjuring), A24’s Backrooms carries two cryptic loglines: “A strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom” and “After her patient disappears into a strange dimension beyond reality, a therapist is forced to brave the unknown in order to bring him back alive.”
Backrooms features a starry cast led by Ejiofor (Doctor Strange) and Reinsve (Sentimental Value). They are joined by Mark Duplass (Creep), Finn Bennet (True Detective: Night Country), Lukita Maxwell (Shrinking), and Avan Jogia (Zombieland: Double Tap).
The trailer features a camera tilting downwards through a series of empty rooms while, in a voiceover, a man (Ejiofor) tells a woman (Reinsve) that he has “found something”. Based on the logline, Ejiofor could be playing the patient to Reinsve’s therapist. His character goes on to say, “Found a place. It’s massive in there. And just goes on and on and on. All these rooms, this place builds them. Actually, more like it remembers them. And the more times it remembers something, the less it does.”
