Via her Instagram account, Sarah Michelle Gellar has revealed that the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is no longer moving forward at Hulu.
Titled Buffy: New Sunnydale, the series would have starred Gellar alongside Ryan Kiera Armstrong as a new slayer, with Chase Sui Wonders playing a vampire. Chloé Zhao (Hamnet) was set to direct and executive produce. The pilot was filmed last year.
“I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me,” Gellar said on Instagram. “Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale. I want to thank Chloé Zhao because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots, and thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means not only to me but to all of you. And this doesn’t change any of that.”
Gellar concluded with a reference to a popular line from the original series: “If the apocalypse actually comes, you can still beep me.”
Since Hulu’s parent company, Disney, owns the rights to the IP, the series will not be picked up by another network or streamer.
