Apple Films has released the first image from Martin Scorsese’s upcoming psychological horror film, What Happens at Night.
Adapted from Peter Cameron’s 2020 novel of the same name, the film follows a married couple (Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence) who travel to a snowy European town to adopt a baby. When they check into an eerily deserted Grand Hotel, they meet a strange cast of characters as their relationship is put to the test. Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson, and Jared Harris also star.
While DiCaprio and Lawrence’s characters are unnamed in the original novel, Mads Mikkelsen has been confirmed to play the mysterious faith healer Brother Emmanuel. Shooting is underway in the Czech Republic, with locations including the W Prague, the Art Nouveau grand hotel where DiCaprio previously shot Titanic.
The moody story isn’t DiCaprio and Scorsese’s first foray into psychological horror. The pair previously collaborated on 2010’s Shutter Island, another book adaptation. What Happens at Night is set to trade the stormy island setting for a Gothic, wintry fever dream. DiCaprio and Lawrence last worked together in the 2021 satirical comedy Don’t Look Up.
