Apple TV has released the teaser trailer for Cape Fear.
Inspired by Martin Scorsese’s 1991 film with Robert De Niro and Jessica Lange, itself a remake of the 1962 southern gothic psychological thriller of the same name, Apple TV’s Cape Fear will reimagine both of those adaptations and their source material, the 1957 novel The Executioners.
Cape Fear follows happily married attorneys Anna (Amy Adams, Sharp Objects) and Tom (Patrick Wilson, The Conjuring), who find their idyllic life upended when a notorious killer (Javier Bardem, Mother!) that they put behind bars is let out of prison. Bardem plays Max Cady, a role made famous by De Niro and Mitchum’s imposing portrayals.
Billed as a Hitchcockian thriller and an examination of America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century, Apple TV’s Cape Fear will debut globally on June 5th with two episodes, while the remaining eight episodes will release weekly.
Nick Antosca (Brand New Cherry Flavor) serves as showrunner, while Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) directs the pilot.
The series will diverge from previous adaptations in that both halves of the tormented married couple play a role in Cady’s imprisonment. In the original story, only Tom is a lawyer, and Cady targets his whole family as a consequence. The decision to make Adams’ character directly responsible for putting Cady away changes the dynamics of the film’s central revenge plot.
Curiously, the upcoming miniseries marks the first time since the original that the Cape Fear story will be told with a new score. The Scorsese version reused the music of the 1962 film, with composer Elmer Bernstein reworking Bernard Herrmann’s score.
