We’ve got another busy month for horror movies in store—and it’s no April Fools joke. From a buzzy found footage film inspired by Blair Witch and The Ring to Lee Cronin’s hotly anticipated The Mummy reimagining, we’ve made you a wicked watchlist filled with mermaids, sharks, and Charli xcx.

Mermaid (April 8th)

Utopia

When a slacker (Fallout’s Johnny Pemberton) discovers an injured mermaid, he becomes determined to nurse her back to health in this wild horror comedy filled with gills and gangsters. John Waters called one of director Tyler Cornack’s previous efforts, Butt Boy, the best film of 2020.

Hunting Matthew Nichols (April 10th)

DeVuono Releasing

23 years after her brother’s disappearance, a documentary filmmaker sets out to find him in the Canadian woods. The found footage horror film, inspired by The Blair Witch Project and The Ring, hits theatres after a buzzy festival run. 

Faces of Death (April 10th)

IFC and Shudder

In this meta reboot, Barbie Ferreira plays a content moderator investigating videos inspired by the 1978 cult classic of the same name, a faux documentary presenting a series of supposedly real deaths. Dacre Montgomery and Charli xcx also star.

Exit 8 (April 10th)

NEON

Before you see Backrooms next month, this Japanese psychological thriller will satisfy your liminal horror fix. Based on the 2023 indie adventure game of the same name, the film follows a Tokyo subway commuter who gets lost in an endless passage, which he must navigate to find the fabled Exit 8.

Thrash (April 10th)

Netflix

After a catastrophic hurricane, a coastal town must battle an onslaught of sharks in this Netflix survival thriller from Tommy Wirkola (Violent Night). Bridgerton’s Phoebe Dynevor leads the cast as a pregnant woman caught in the chaos.

The Yeti (April 10th)

Well Go USA Entertainment

When an oil tycoon and a renowned adventurer vanish in the Alaskan mountains, a rescue team sets out to retrieve them. But the punishing weather is the least of their worries when they stumble across the titular monster in this practical effects-driven tribute to old-school creature features.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy (April 17th)

Warner Bros.

In this reimagining from director Lee Cronin (Evil Dead Rise) and famed horror producers James Wan (The Conjuring) and Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity), the young daughter of a journalist disappears in the desert. Eight years later, she returns to her broken family, but the miraculous reunion quickly becomes a nightmare.

Mārama (April 17th)

Dark Sky Films

Set in Victorian England, this New Zealand Gothic horror film follows a young Māori woman who, after receiving a mysterious letter from a stranger claiming to know about her heritage, travels to a manor in Yorkshire—only to unearth some horrifying secrets.

FROM Season 4 (April 19th)

MGM+

This sci-fi horror series centres on a nightmarish US town that traps anyone who enters, where they have to fend off predatory creatures that only come out at night. The show returns to MGM+ for its fourth season.

Widow’s Bay (April 29th)

Apple TV

In this new horror comedy series from Apple TV, a mayor (Matthew Rhys) is determined to turn Widow’s Bay, a quaint New England island community short on wi-fi, into a tourist hot spot. The only issue? The deeply superstitious residents keep warning him that their town is cursed.
