Focus Features has unveiled the first trailer for Werwulf, the upcoming fifth film from The Witch and Nosferatu director Robert Eggers, at CinemaCon.

Blending folk and body horror, the teaser follows a couple (Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp) arriving at a grimy Medieval town plagued by a series of beastly attacks. Willem Dafoe plays a village elder.

Between shots of mauled villagers, a burning church, and a shrieking Lily-Rose Depp, the atmospheric Werwulf trailer concludes with Aaron Taylor-Johnson mid-transformation in a barn, foaming at the mouth as he screams. We do not get a glimpse of the monster, a marketing decision that will likely persist for the rest of the trailers, as Nosferatu did not reveal the titular villain before the film’s release.

“My soul is cursed,” Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s protagonist says as he looks up at a full moon. “My kin is cursed. My world is cursed.” Werwulf marks the actor’s second collaboration with Robert Eggers, following his role as Friedrich Harding in Nosferatu.

“It won’t be Romantic, I’ll tell you that much,” Werwulf cinematographer Jarin Blaschke said to Phantasmag about the upcoming film. “It will be pretty grim and brutal.” Werwulf will be presented in a 1:33:1 aspect ratio.

The trailer may be released online in the coming weeks, but it will likely be attached to Focus Features’ buzzy horror film Obsession when it opens May 15th.
