Survival horror video game Dead by Daylight is getting a film adaptation with Thordur Palsson directing.
At the 10th anniversary celebration of Dead by Daylight, Behaviour Interactive’s popular survival horror multiplayer game, Blumhouse-Atomic Monster CEO Jason Blum announced that Thordur Palsson will direct the upcoming film adaptation.
The Icelandic director is best known for his 2019 mystery series The Valhalla Murders and his critically acclaimed 2024 period folk horror film The Damned. He is currently working on the climate disaster miniseries Avalanche.
The video game, which has featured crossovers with horror films like Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Evil Dead, and more, has one player take the role of the Killer and the four others play as Survivors. The Killer must sacrifice the Survivors to an evil entity, while the Survivors must work together to repair generators that will allow them to escape.
Dead by Daylight follows fellow horror video games Five Nights at Freddy’s, Iron Lung, and Until Dawn in receiving a film adaptation.
“There is no better moment than the tenth anniversary to share this news,” said Jason Blum in a statement. “Thordur is the filmmaker we trust to carry Dead by Daylight from the screen you play on to the big screen you watch in theatres.”
James Wan, fellow founder and CEO of Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, added, “Thordur understands that the terror only lands if you care about who’s running, and The Damned proved he can make you feel the walls closing in. That is exactly the instinct this film needs on screen.”
