Spoilers below for Episode 3 of Cape Fear.
In a surprise appearance, Juliette Lewis was revealed to be part of the cast of Apple TV’s Cape Fear miniseries in Episode 3, “Phantom Sensations”. Her performance as Danielle Bowden in Martin Scorsese’s 1991 remake earned her an Oscar nomination at only 18 years old.
Trailing Javier Bardem’s Max Cady, Lewis plays a mysterious woman from Cady’s past, wearing a hooded green raincoat and a face mask. The plot inverts her role in the 1991 film, in which the villain, played by Robert De Niro, stalks her teenage character.
Lewis’ appearance is not without precedent: Robert Mitchum, Gregory Peck, and Martin Balsam, stars of the original Cape Fear (1962), all appeared in small roles in the 1991 Scorsese film. Her role is one of many overt references to past iterations, with the miniseries re-using Bernard Herrmann’s 1962 score (again) and nodding to the dynamic camera movement and inverted imagery that defined the cinematography of the 1991 version.

Showrunner Nick Antosca, who previously worked with Lewis on 2019 biographical crime series The Act, told Entertainment Weekly that he had always wanted the actress to star in his reimagining. "I knew from that point, from even just the initial conversation about the rights, that I would love to have her be in it because she showed up for one episode in The Act,” he said. “She was so great. And so I wanted to work with her again."
Antosca’s version of Cape Fear updates the story as a modern-day psychological thriller about a married lawyer couple (Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson) whose idyllic family life is upended when Max Cady, a notorious convict they put behind bars, is released from prison — and hellbent on revenge. Adams takes on the role originally played by Gregory Peck and Nick Nolte, while Wilson plays her husband, an attorney who was involved in Cady’s case.
Lewis was seen earlier this year in Jorma Taccone’s action horror comedy Over Your Dead Body and surreal body-swap drama By Design. In horror television, she is known for her critically acclaimed role as the present-day Natalie in Showtime’s hit coming-of-age thriller Yellowjackets.
The 10-episode Cape Fear miniseries is streaming on Apple TV, with new episodes every Friday.
