Apple TV has ordered a second season of horror comedy Widow’s Bay, its hit series about a cursed coastal town starring Matthew Rhys. The news comes ahead of the season finale, airing June 17th.
In addition to the series renewal, showrunner Katie Dippold has signed a multi-year overall deal at Apple TV. She will continue to serve as showrunner on Widow’s Bay as she develops other projects.
“Season two is about how everything is great on the island and there’s nothing to worry about,” she joked in a statement.
Since premiering April 29th, Widow’s Bay has drawn acclaim from critics and audiences alike, with Rhys and Kate O’Flynn’s performances earning particular praise. It follows a mayor (Rhys) who wants to turn his New England island town into a tourist hot spot, but he must face the reality that Widow’s Bay is comically cursed, plagued by everything from an evil self-help book to a sea hag.
The framework turns the show into a spin on the monster-of-the-week series, while Dippold, a horror fan who wrote on Parks and Recreation, maintains a unique tonal blend that balances horror and comedy without diminishing either of the two elements.
“From the moment audiences arrived in Widow’s Bay, they’ve been hooked on every eerie mystery, unexpected laughs, and cursed secret that Katie [Dippold], [director] Hiro [Murai], Matthew, and the entire team have created,” said Matt Cherniss, head of programming at Apple TV. “It’s become one of those shows everyone’s talking about, and we’re thrilled to see audiences continue to embrace it. We can’t wait to return for another season.”
