Vogue has unveiled a series of first-look images for American Horror Story: 13.

The new stills feature Jessica Lange as Constance Langdon, Sarah Paulson as Cordelia Goode, Evan Peters as Kai Anderson, Angela Bassett as Marie Laveau, and Emma Roberts as Madison Montgomery.

“I didn’t want to just do a Coven reboot,” Ryan Murphy told Vogue. “I was very interested in the greatest villains we’ve done.” Peters is confirmed to reprise three of his antagonists, including Kai Anderson, James Patrick March, and Season 1 fan-favourite Tate Langdon.

The Monster actor is playing an additional two characters, Paulson is playing six, and Lange is reprising all four of her roles from the show’s first four seasons. Departing AHS after Freak Show finished airing in 2015 and only guest starring in a small role in 2018’s Apocalypse, Lange was the show’s original flagship star, and Murphy has stated that he may not have proceeded with the new season had Lange declined to return.

The prolific television producer met Lange for a dinner, where she fondly recalled her time on the series and suggested that fans today only come up to her to discuss AHS and not Blue Sky or Tootsie. “I told her, ‘That’s funny. That’s why I wanted to meet you,’” Murphy recalled. “And I pitched her, and she said, ‘Great. I’m in as long as I have a musical number.’”

While the plot of American Horror Story: 13 remains strictly under wraps, Ryan Murphy has teased that the main villain of the season is “above [the] pay grade” of the Antichrist (Cody Fern), who was the antagonist of Season 8, Apocalypse. With the devil potentially featuring as the villain, the protagonist seems to be Joey Pollari’s Ben, who is anchoring a new story that will allow for all the previous characters to return.

The images also feature Jamie Brewer as Addie Langdon, Mena Suvari as the Black Dahlia, and John Carroll Lynch as Twisty the Clown. Kathy Bates, Gabourey Sidibe, John Waters, Alex Consani, Avantika Vandanapu, and Paul Anthony Kelly also star in the series.
