Following the staggering success of Backrooms, Hollywood’s biggest studios are rushing to ink a deal with Kane Parsons to secure his future work. The 21-year-old director has met with Warner Bros. and HBO, as the proposed deal would include film and TV, as well as Universal, who recently locked down Curry Barker’s next film with a rich eight-figure deal.

A24 is also courting Kane Parsons for both a Backrooms sequel and another original project. Writing yesterday on Discord, the director clarified that “any future Backrooms films/series” would involve A24 as they hold the rights, and that he has “a very healthy and easygoing creative relationship with them.”

Puck has reported that A24 is offering their biggest deal ever to secure Parsons, with a three-year first-look deal upwards of $65 million. In addition to the meetings with Warner Bros., HBO, and Universal, which have been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, Puck reports that Sony is likewise pursuing the filmmaker.

While Kane Parsons wrote about his “easygoing creative relationship” with A24 in the same thread of comments on Discord, he also voiced his disapproval of the studio’s $75 million AI research partnership with Google. “Their Google deal is certainly not something I support, however I am certain it will not have any crossover with any hypothetical future Backrooms projects.”

An indie studio whose value and resources have skyrocketed to rival the majors’, A24 drew criticism for their lucrative research partnership to drive AI-powered filmmaking. Communications rep Sophia Shin defended the decision in a statement: “We’d rather have a seat at the table than on the sidelines.”
