Sony Pictures has landed Hollow, the Sydney Sweeney-led reimagining of Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow that reframes the story as a seductive supernatural love triangle from the perspective of Katrina Van Tassel. The film will blend mystery, horror, and erotic thriller elements.
Lindsey Anderson Beer (Pet Sematary: Bloodlines) is writing and directing Hollow, based on her forthcoming novel of the same name, a feminist update on Irving’s 1820 short story. The novel will be published by Putnam, an imprint of Penguin Random House, in fall 2027. Translation rights to the book have already been sold around the world, with Deadline reporting record offers from some territories.
Sweeney’s Honey Trap banner is producing alongside Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap and Beer’s Lab Brew. Casting is underway for the two other members of the love triangle, Ichabod Crane and Brom Bones.
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow was notably adapted on the big screen with Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow (1999), starring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci. The film updated the ghost story as a Hammer Horror-inspired mystery, winning the Academy Award for Best Art Direction.
After starring in Immaculate and the hit psychological thriller The Housemaid, Sydney Sweeney has more horror credits on the way in addition to Hollow. The Euphoria actress will lead supernatural horror The Caretaker, from Hellraiser (2022) director David Bruckner, and the Reddit short story adaptation I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl for Warner Bros.
