Michael Johnston is in early talks to join the fourth instalment of The Mummy franchise.

Previously known for Teen Wolf, Johnston had his breakout role this year as the lead in Curry Barker’s Obsession, the surprise indie horror phenomenon which has grossed over $450 million at the worldwide box office on a budget of only $750,000 — and is still playing in cinemas.

As reported last autumn, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are confirmed to return for The Mummy sequel. The stars led the original 1999 film and its 2001 sequel, The Mummy Returns, which were both significant box office successes. Weisz was replaced by Mario Bello in the 2008 threequel, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. John Hannah, who starred in all three films, is likewise returning.

Releasing October 15th 2027, The Mummy sequel will be helmed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Known as Radio Silence, the directing duo is recognised for their horror films like Scream (2022), Abigail, and this year’s Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. The pair are directing from a script by David Coggeshall (Prey, Orphan First Kill).

Securing the role would keep Johnston in the Universal family, after their indie speciality label Focus Features picked up Obsession for $15 million.
