Inde Navarrette will topline a huge awards season campaign for Focus Features’ Obsession.

The breakout star will officially campaign in the Best Actress category this coming awards season, as confirmed by Variety. She will headline a massive awards season push by Focus Features for Obsession, including campaigns for Michael Johnston (Best Actor), Megan Lawless (Best Supporting Actress), Cooper Tomlinson (Best Supporting Actor), and writer-director Curry Barker (Best Director, Original Screenplay, and Film Editing), a trio of categories that Sean Baker recently swept for Anora.

While there has been Oscar buzz around Inde Navarrette’s breakout performance in Obsession, which has since led to her booking the role of Rogue in the MCU’s X-Men reboot, the indie horror film becoming an enduring global phenomenon (grossing over $500 million worldwide) will have influenced the choice to try for the ostensibly more competitive Lead Actress category.

While the Best Director and Film Editing Oscars will likely prove more difficult, Barker will hope to capitalise on the Original Screenplay category’s recent history of favouring horror cinema, a genre that has long been excluded by the Academy. Ryan Coogler became the second screenwriter to win the award with a horror film for last year’s Sinners, following Jordan Peele’s win for 2017’s Get Out.

The news comes a day after a report that one of the film’s executive producers, Leonora Ann Darby, is suing her colleagues, producers Tea Shop Productions co-founders James Harris and Mark Lane, for allegedly cutting her out of an agreed one-third share of the net profits after the film became a huge hit. The lawsuit alleges that she acted as a lead producer, not an executive producer, as per the internal definitions understood by the production company. Given that she has been credited as an executive producer instead, she will not be recognised if the film earns a Best Picture nomination.
