Following the huge box office success of Backrooms, A24 is adapting another internet IP in the form of the SCP Foundation, a collaborative horror writing project born out of a creepypasta community in which authors pretend to be members of the shadowy, Men-in-Black-esque organisation of the same name. Created in 2008, the SCP Foundation has been expanded by thousands of contributors around the world.

The untitled film adaptation, tentatively referred to as V/H/S: SCP, hails from Image Nation Studios (Late Night with the Devil) and Spooky Pictures (undertone, Hokum), who are also re-teaming on Curry Barker’s forthcoming follow-up to Obsession, Anything but Ghosts.

While A24 are planning to release the V/H/S: SCP film in 2027, the SCP Foundation Wiki, the project’s original creators, have published a statement claiming that they were not consulted about the project and that A24 “does not and cannot have exclusive rights to anything related to the SCP Foundation”.

The statement contests that the SCP Foundation is under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license. Derivative works are allowed, but the crux of the complaint is that A24 “would not be able to establish any sort of exclusivity with respect to distribution”.

A24’s V/H/S: SCP film is the next in a series of planned creepypasta adaptations after Backrooms grossed nearly $400 million worldwide. Projects include a Zach Cregger-penned “Siren Head” film and a Steven Spielberg-produced adaptation of the viral YouTube series The Mandela Catalogue.
