Inde Navarrette brought the horror star power to SNL’s Halloween episode.

Hosting Saturday Night Live for the first time, the Obsession actress visited the famous Studio 8H at 30 Rockefeller Plaza for a show spoofing telenovelas, unruly airplane passengers, and podcast-addicted men. Gracie Abrams was the musical guest, performing “Hit the Wall” and “Here You Come, There You Go” from the deluxe edition of her album Daughter From Hell.

Wearing a black dress reminiscent of Natalie Portman’s Black Swan costume, Navarrette began the episode with a monologue filled with Obsession nods, from quoting the iconic restaurant scene (“No, no, no, don’t do that!”) to joking she’s “nothing like [her] character”, Nikki. After the latter comment, a cut to the audience reveals her real-life boyfriend (singer-songwriter Nick Aiello) has been bound to a chair and gagged with duct tape, referencing the scene where Nikki duct-tapes a door shut to keep her boyfriend, Bear (Michael Johnston), from leaving.

Navarrette then fired back at Shane Gillis after his viral SNL monologue, which featured a misogynistic joke about women dressing like “whores” in the gym. Referencing her preparation for her role as Rogue in the MCU’s upcoming X-Men reboot, she quipped, “Every morning I put on my little whore outfit, and I hit the gym.”

A standout of the night was the gory pre-taped short, “The Inventor’s Wife”. Billed as a “Midnight Matinee”, the film sees the Obsession star play the widow of an eccentric man who “loved his inventions, [but only] liked his wife.” When he leaves her behind a cute robot, the gruesome reveal of its function once the woman starts dating again helps her realise her husband truly loved her.

In another sketch, Navarrette joined SNL breakout star Marcello Hernández in playing two annoying ghost children on a ship who keep interrupting the spirit of an old woman (Sarah Sherman) from revealing where she hid a collection of priceless diamonds.

With Navarrette a virtual unknown less than six months ago, hosting SNL is a significant sign of her rising star in Hollywood. Since the release of the cultural phenomenon Obsession, she booked the X-Men reboot and will headline a massive awards season campaign for Curry Barker’s horror film.
