Ridley Scott’s new Alien movie is moving forward.

After the original film’s director teased that a sequel to Alien: Covenant was in the works during his press tour for The Dog Stars, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the new Alien movie is getting off the ground with Aaron Guzikowski penning the script.

“I’m rewriting the next Alien film,” Scott told AlloCiné this August about the next instalment of the sci-fi horror franchise. “I suddenly went back and got involved. The one that just came out [2024’s Alien: Romulus] was OK. I think it needs some help, so I’ve gone back in.” The announced Romulus sequel remains in limbo, with Scott’s prequel trilogy now taking priority.

Guzikowski is reuniting with the Blade Runner filmmaker after the HBO sci-fi drama Raised by Wolves, which the writer created and Scott executive produced in addition to directing the first two episodes. He is best known for Prisoners, the acclaimed 2013 psychological thriller with Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal that marked the English-language debut of Dune director Denis Villeneuve.

According to Scott, the upcoming sequel to Prometheus and Alien: Covenant will follow Michael Fassbender’s AI villain, David, as he creates a “brave new world for himself.” Neither Fassbender nor a director is yet attached to the project, with Scott only confirmed to be producing for now.

“I like the fact that AI has gone off the rails,” the director said of Fassbender’s character and the narrative hook of a rogue AI. “If we go AI, the moment we discover it’s off the rails is too late. It could switch every digital thing off in the world like that. You’d have fucking chaos. It’s that kind of stuff that’s scary.”
