The art world is getting a morbid, hilarious satire in Cathy Yan’s The Gallerist.

When a Final Destination-esque accident (Zach Galifianakis’ obnoxious art influencer, Dalton, is impaled by a sculpture) becomes a viral art piece, a neurotic gallerist (Natalie Portman) must work with her assistant (Jenna Ortega) to sell the dead body at Art Basel Miami before it decomposes. Yan (Birds of Prey) directs the dark comedy thriller, which premiered at Sundance, from a script co-written with James Pedersen.

Sporting a platinum bob and bright white Margiela pumps, Portman plays Polina Polinski, who manages a struggling gallery funded by the divorce settlement from her husband, Tom (a smooth Sterling K. Brown), who has made a fortune in canned tuna. Along with her high-strung assistant, Kiki (Ortega), she is promoting the work of emerging artist Stella (Da’Vine Joy Randolph).

After the accident, Polina and Kiki enlist the help of an elegant art consultant (Catherine Zeta-Jones, reuniting with her on-screen daughter, Ortega, after Wednesday) to turn the now-viral piece/crime scene into a lucrative sale, leaving Daniel Brühl to enter the scene as a sleazy potential buyer, while Dalton’s aspiring artist situationship (pop superstar Charli xcx) throws a spanner in the works when she comes round wanting to see the attraction (“It slaps,” she tells Polina).

The Gallerist opens in US theatres Friday, December 4th.
