After a pilot was greenlit earlier this year, Ryan Coogler’s The X-Files reboot has received a series order at Hulu.
The reimagining stars Danielle Deadwyler (The Woman in the Yard) and Himesh Patel (The Odyssey) as two “highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.” The pair are not Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny’s agents Scully and Mulder, but rather playing new characters.
The series order is good news for fans of the sci-fi mystery show created by Chris Carter, as the streamer recently didn’t pick up the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot after the pilot had been shot, despite the involvement of original star Sarah Michelle Gellar and Oscar-winning writer-director Chloé Zhao.
Coogler is writing and directing the pilot of the reboot, with his Oscar-winning Sinners cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw behind the camera. Amy Madigan (Weapons) and Steve Buscemi (Wednesday) have been tapped as guest stars, alongside Ben Foster, Lochlyn Munro, Devery Jacobs, Tantoo Cardinal, Joel D. Montgrand, and Sofia Grace Clifton.
“I’ve loved The X-Files for a long time, so getting the chance to write and direct the pilot has meant a great deal to me,” said Coogler. “What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world. Danielle and Himesh, along with the rest of our cast, have brought such original perspectives and performances to these characters, and watching that come together has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience. I couldn’t have asked for better collaborators than my crew, colleagues at Proximity Media and our partners at Onyx Collective and 20th Television. I’m grateful for the trust and support they’ve given us as we take on this new chapter.”
Ryan and Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian of Proximity Media will executive produce the series, alongside Chris Carter and Jennifer Yale. Yale (The Copenhagen Test) will serve as showrunner.
