Nicolas Winding Refn has taken to Instagram to announce that his long-awaited Maniac Cop remake will be released in 2027.

Released in 1988, William Lustig’s cult slasher follows a mysterious killer who dresses as a police officer and stalks the streets of New York City. Refn’s reimagining will transport the story to Los Angeles.

Emerging from development hell, the Maniac Cop reboot was originally conceived as a film with John Hyams directing and then an HBO series with Nicolas Winding Refn as showrunner and Hyams as his co-director. Mubi and Goodfellas are now on board a revived feature, with the former company handling distribution in North America, the UK & Ireland, and more territories.

Speaking with the Icons of Fright podcast in March, Lustig revealed that the TV series fell through as HBO was sold to Discovery.

Lustig also revealed that Refn has the reboot lined up as his next project, suggesting that shooting is set for this autumn. Deadline has reported it will begin in January.

Refn’s next film, Her Private Hell, premiered this week at the Cannes Film Festival. Starring Sophie Thatcher and Charles Melton, the feature marks the Danish auteur’s first in 10 years, following The Neon Demon.
