Filming has wrapped on Universal’s The Exorcist reboot. Bearing no connection to 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer, Mike Flanagan (The Fall of the House of Usher) is writing and directing a new story in the universe.

The reboot will see Flanagan return to big-screen horror filmmaking for the first time since 2019’s Doctor Sleep. The writer-director is known for his horror television, including Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and the upcoming Carrie miniseries.

Produced by Flanagan via his Red Room Pictures banner, David Robinson for Morgan Creek Entertainment, and Jason Blum for Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, the film features an all-star cast led by Scarlett Johansson, who plays the mother of Hamnet breakout star Jacobi Jupe. Fresh off Backrooms, Chiwetel Ejiofor is reportedly portraying an ex-con turned priest.

The actors are joined by Laurence Fishburne, John Leguizamo, Sasha Calle, and Diane Lane, along with Flanagan regulars Rahul Kohli, Kate Siegel, Hamish Linklater, Carla Gugino, Gil Bellows, Carl Lumbly, Robert Longstreet, Matt Biedel, Samantha Sloyan, John Gallagher Jr., and Benjamin Pajak.

The film is set for a March 12, 2027 release date.
