FX has released the first-look image of Ryan Murphy’s The Shards.
Adapting Bret Easton Ellis’ (American Psycho) autofictional horror novel of the same name, the series follows a group of students at an elite prep school as they navigate sex, jealousy, and a teenager-targeting serial killer known as The Trawler.
Igby Rigney (Midnight Mass) plays Bret Easton Ellis, while his elite social circle is portrayed by Hayes Warner, Graham Campbell, and Kaia Gerber, who reunites with Ryan Murphy after American Horror Story. The glamorous group enjoy a life of wealth, parties, and excess, but Bret’s reality soon begins to unravel with the arrival of a mysterious new student (Euphoria star Homer Gere).
The students’ endeavours are contrasted with the cynical world of the adults surrounding them, played by Wes Bentley (another AHS regular), Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld), and Tony Award-winning producer Jordan Roth.
The Shards marks the third series this year for prolific showrunner Ryan Murphy, following sci-fi body horror The Beauty and biographical drama Love Story. This September, his cult anthology series American Horror Story returns for a 13th season.
The adaptation was originally in development at HBO, with Ellis reporting that Luca Guadagnino (Challengers) would direct. The Drama director Kristoffer Borgli was then attached to helm the series, before the project fell through at HBO and ended up at FX in its current form.
