Nicholas Alexander Chavez (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story), Madeline Brewer (You), and Emory Cohen (Marty Supreme) have been cast in Paramount’s remake of Possession from Smile director Parker Finn.

The trio join Paul Dano (The Batman) and Diego Calva (Her Private Hell), with Margaret Qualley (The Substance) and Callum Turner (Rose of Nevada) leading the cast in the roles originated by Isabelle Adjani and the late Sam Neill.

Divisive upon its release in 1981, Possession has since been positively reappraised. The film follows an unravelling couple, Anna (Adjani) and Mark (Neill), in Cold War Berlin who exhibit increasingly disturbing behaviour after Anna asks for a divorce.

Due to its cult following, the remake has inspired intense online backlash, although Adjani has expressed her support for the project and given Margaret Qualley her blessing to take on her role. “Why not?” she said to Numéro at the Cannes Film Festival, calling the remake a sign of “intelligent opportunism” in the wake of a popular Hollywood trend.

In the same interview, Adjani singled out Qualley for praise, describing her as “incredibly talented” before taking to Instagram yesterday to share photos of The Substance actress on set in New York City.

New additions Chavez, Brewer, and Cohen all have experience in the horror genre. Chavez starred in the Ryan Murphy projects Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story and Grotesquerie, while Brewer, best known for her roles in TV series You and The Handmaid’s Tale, led the psychological horror Cam. Cohen, meanwhile, starred in survival horror Sweetheart and psychological thrillers Flashback and The Wolf Hour.

Possession is expected to be released in 2027.
