Matthew Rhys has made history as the first person ever to win two Lead Actor Emmys in a single night, triumphing in the Comedy Series and Limited or Anthology Series categories for Widow’s Bay and The Beast in Me, respectively.

Rhys played the comically anxious mayor Tom Loftis in Apple TV’s hit horror comedy Widow’s Bay, while he delivered a far more menacing performance as the real estate executive Nile Jarvis in Netflix’s acclaimed psychological thriller series The Beast in Me.

The victories mark the Welsh actor’s second and third Emmys, after he won Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2018 for his breakout role in The Americans.

While James Earl Jones previously won two Emmys for acting in one night, triumphing for Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Special, Rhys is the first to win in two Lead Actor categories.

Rhys is a three-time nominee this year, also sharing The Beast in Me’s nomination for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series as an executive producer.
