Diablo Cody has revealed that the script for the Jennifer’s Body sequel is finished, teasing the first details about its plot.
“We’re doing a sequel to [Jennifer’s Body] imminently, and I felt like, in the new movie, I was able to explore even more why Jennifer is sympathetic,” the Juno and Lisa Frankenstein screenwriter told the Petticoat Revolution podcast. “There is absolutely, to me, a loneliness and a poignancy to that character that people don’t always recognise.”
Confirming that the script is “done” after revealing she was actively working on it earlier this year, Cody has reiterated that the sequel is “1000% happening”. Original stars Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried and director Karyn Kusama are all set to return.
“Jennifer is a sympathetic character for me before and after the transformation,” Cody said, reflecting on the perception of the character as a “mean girl”. “She is very isolated. She’s very lonely. She’s very insecure. Everybody remembers Jennifer when she’s like, ‘I am a god’ or when she’s at her most radiant and at her most powerful, but people forget about these moments in the movie where she’s a shell of herself. She’s just exsanguinated, almost. And to me, Megan [Fox] played both of those sides of Jennifer so well.”
While regarded as a cult classic today, Jennifer’s Body was a critical and commercial disappointment upon its release in 2009, with its poor performance often attributed to the fact that the horror comedy was marketed to teenage boys, capitalising on Megan Fox’s popularity after Transformers.
But for the sequel, Cody says that it already feels like a dramatically different experience. “The vibe going into this one is so different because everyone gets it. They know what it is; they love the first movie. We know who this is for [and]how we’re gonna market it, whereas the first time around, it was like, ‘Oh, we’re going to market this to teenage boys,’ and I was like, No, no, no, no, no, no, no.”
A Production Weekly listing this summer had this October as the start date for production on the sequel, but a later date is likely given Cody’s update.
