Universal has unveiled the first trailer for The Exorcist: Martyrs.

From horror auteur Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House), the film follows Julie Miller (Scarlett Johansson), an NYC detective who discovers a pattern linking a lineage of serial killers, from H.H. Holmes to the Zodiac, that could corrupt everyone she loves with an evil that goes well beyond the mortal.

Thirteen years ago, Miller ended the terror reign of satanic serial killer Father Sunday (John Leguizamo of The Odyssey). The case made her a hero, and she has thrown herself into her work ever since. Now a new killer scrawls her name in an altar boy’s blood on the walls of a church crypt, dragging her back into the darkness she believed she had buried with him.

Inspired by films like Se7en and The Silence of the Lambs, the film sees Miller team up with Father William (Chiwetel Ejiofor, returning to the horror genre after Backrooms), a former prison chaplain who heard Father Sunday’s final confession.

“The Exorcist, as we've approached it, is radically different,” Flanagan told Phantasmag, referencing the serial killer mystery framework of Martyrs. “What I love is a chance to use the familiar to do something very new, and The Exorcist, even more so than Carrie [Flanagan’s new modern-day miniseries update of the Stephen King classic], gave me that opportunity.”

The film also stars Diane Lane (Anniversary) as Julie’s mother, who has moved in with her to help raise her grandson Max (Jacobi Jupe, Hamnet); Scoot McNairy (Speak No Evil) as paroled convict Clay Silver; Gil Bellows (Carrie) as Peter Nicks, a former acolyte of Father Sunday; and Laurence Fishburne (The Amateur) as revered priest Father Nichol.

The Exorcist: Martyrs hits UK and US cinemas on March 12th, 2027.
