IFC and Shudder have released the trailer for the queer body horror thriller Saccharine.

After helming the critically acclaimed psychological horror film Relic and the Rosemary’s Baby prequel Apartment 7A, Saccharine will mark the third feature for Australian-American writer-director Natalie Erika James. The film follows a lovelorn medical student (Midori Francis) who, as she pines for the attractive instructor (Madeleine Madden) running a gym program, takes a weight-loss pill with a bizarre key ingredient: human ash. While the drug yields remarkable results, she soon finds herself haunted by the ghost of the person she ingested.

Drawing from contemporary diet culture and featuring weight-loss TikToks, Saccharine is situated in a 2020s body horror boom driven by film and TV like The Substance, The Beauty, and The Ugly Stepsister, which all explore the dark side of beauty standards.

The film premiered at Sundance before playing at the Berlinale and the Overlook Film Festival.
