Juliette Gariépy is joining Replacer, Avan Jogia’s psychosexual horror starring Halsey in her first lead film role.

The project, which was announced earlier this year when sales launched at Cannes, is set to begin filming in Montreal on September 16. In addition to directing, Jogia, who recently starred in Backrooms, is co-writing the film with Halsey, his partner. The singer previously appeared in Ti West’s 2024 slasher MaXXXine.

Gariépy is best known for her breakout role leading the cult 2023 film Red Rooms, a French-Canadian serial killer thriller about a woman who becomes increasingly obsessed with a gruesome murder trial.

The actress boards Replacer alongside Karl Glusman (The Neon Demon) and composer Alex Ridha, the German music producer also known as Boys Noize, who recently handled the Challengers remix album.

Replacer follows a troubled DJ (Halsey), stranded in Montreal, who meets an alluring artist and his friend group who run an underground radio station. When the station’s broadcast becomes warped by a mysterious signal, she must escape before the sound turns her into something horrific. Lilly Wachowski (The Matrix, Sense8) is executive producing.

Ahead of Replacer, Gariépy will star in the Netflix period survival thriller Play Dead. With Sam Raimi producing and Jaume Collet-Serra (House of Wax, Orphan) directing, the WWII-set film has been billed as Don’t Breathe meets 1917.
