Ethel Cain is officially joining the world of Robert Eggers.

After The Hollywood Reporter listed an untitled original song for Werwulf by the Preacher’s Daughter singer on an Oscars predictions piece, Cain is now confirmed to feature on the soundtrack for Eggers’ medieval creature feature.

Credited to Cain and composer Robin Carolan, who previously scored Eggers’ 2024 hit, Nosferatu, “Wynter Waxeth” is a six-minute song that closes out the Werwulf soundtrack album. A shorter song with Cain, “Wynter Waxeth I”, is listed earlier in the soundtrack and therefore may appear in the film rather than the end credits, where “Wynter Waxeth” is expected to feature.

The soundtrack is now available to pre-order, while the title track has been released in full. Cain’s song will be released on November 13th.

“Wynter Waxeth” marks Ethel Cain’s first original song written for a film. The American singer, known for her Southern Gothic music and lyrics, previously wrote “Famous Last Words (An Ode to Eaters)” in response to watching Luca Guadagnino’s 2022 horror romance Bones and All. The film explores themes of cannibalism, which are central to her debut record, Preacher’s Daughter, a concept album chronicling the murder of the fictional character “Ethel Cain”, whose real name is Hayden Silas Anhedönia.

Werwulf reunites Eggers with his Nosferatu stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe. The film follows a medieval English village ravaged by vicious wolf attacks, with Dafoe’s character setting out to hunt the titular beast.

35mm screenings for the film across the US were announced earlier this week.

Werwulf is playing in cinemas from December 25th in the US and January 1st in the UK.
