Focus Features has unveiled the official poster for Werwulf.

The striking black-and-white poster sees Aaron Taylor-Johnson writhe in a cemetery, under a full moon, as he transforms into the titular beast.

The fifth film from Robert Eggers (The Witch, Nosferatu), Werwulf follows a farmer (Taylor-Johnson) who travels with his wife (Lily-Rose Depp) and three children to a remote village in medieval England.

The grim trailer, released last month, revealed that Taylor-Johnson’s character, who is unnamed in the film, was cursed in his childhood. Meanwhile, Eggers regular Willem Dafoe, who has feature in every one of the auteur’s films since The Lighthouse, plays a hunter targeting the creature that has been ravaging his village.

In a first-look interview with Esquire, Eggers described Taylor-Johnson’s performance as “incredibly harrowing” and the “best of his career”. He also revealed that the film was shot on 35mm and that he and his long-time cinematographer Jarin Blaschke used an orthochromatic treatment in post-production to make the skin tones more “wrecked”.

Speaking to Phantasmag during pre-production last year, Blaschke said that Werwulf would look “grim and brutal”, with more “texture” than the pair’s previous efforts. “It won’t look like anything I’ve seen this decade, that’s for sure.”
