Zach Cregger’s The Flood has lined up its star.

Jennifer Lawrence has boarded the Weapons and Barbarian writer-director’s follow-up to Resident Evil.  “Jennifer is one of a kind,” Cregger said in a statement. “And I’m beyond excited to see her in this role.”

The Oscar-winning actress is coming off her acclaimed leading turn in Lynne Ramsay’s psychological thriller Die My Love. The Flood marks another upcoming genre film for Jennifer Lawrence, who, after reprising her role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, can next be seen in Martin Scorsese’s Gothic psychological horror film What Happens at Night opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.

“Jennifer Lawrence is one of the most gifted and compelling actors working today,” added Warner Bros. co-chairs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, “and we are thrilled to have her at the centre of Zach’s bold and wholly original vision for The Flood. Following our extraordinary experience together on Weapons, we could not be more excited to reunite with Zach and the team at Vertigo, as well as Amblin to bring this ambitious film to audiences around the world.”

Describing the film as “disturbing”, Zach Cregger told Men’s Health that The Flood has similarities with 2001: A Space Odyssey, which he describes as “a really thrilling horror movie about human nature.” Highlighting Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 classic as a “north star” while in pre-production, Cregger suggests his film will ask “big questions” like 2001. “I'm not comparing it to 2001 [in terms of quality], because I think 2001 is a true masterpiece in every sense of the word, but there’s a bizarreness to that movie that’s really undeniable, and it’s also a horror movie.”

Cregger’s latest film, Resident Evil, is currently playing in theatres and has grossed an impressive $200 million worldwide. One of Hollywood’s most in-demand genre filmmakers, his upcoming projects include a Weapons prequel centred on Amy Madigan’s villain Aunt Gladys and a film adaptation of the viral creepypasta character “Siren Head”.
